Proud parents celebrate Kebinatshipi’s historic win

In an electrifying display of speed and skill, Collen Kebinatshipi has cemented his place in athletics history. The young Botswana sensation from Lotlhakane East in the Kanye District won gold in the men’s 400m event at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, and anchored Botswana to victory in the 4x400m relay with a thrilling showdown, overhauling the Americans to claim a second gold for the country, and a historic first for the continent.

We caught up with Collen’s proud parents, John and Joyce Kebinatshipi, who shared their joy and pride in their son’s remarkable achievements.

“He’s always had a passion for athletics, and we’ve supported him every step of the way,” said the golden boy’s elated mother, Joyce. “We knew he had the potential to excel, and we’re thrilled to see him achieve his dreams.”

Collen’s father said they were not surprised by the sprinter’s success in Tokyo as he has proven to be a gifted kid since his primary school days. “We’ve always encouraged him to pursue his passion,” he said. The proud father said his son idolized the legendary sprinter Isaac Makwala from a young age. “Makwala is the inspiration. He used to wear an armband just like Isaac’s, and to this day he looks up to him as a role model,” revealed the senior Kebinatshipi.

The nation’s World Championship toast and member of the Jwaneng Athletics Club is under the mentorship of coach Chilume ‘Chipa’ Ntshwarang. He’s currently based in the Netherlands, where he is under contract with global sportswear and footwear brand, Nike.

As the nation awaits the arrival of team Botswana from Tokyo, Collen’s parents have further revealed that preparations are already underway to give the two-time gold medalist a befitting welcome on his return.

“We’re meeting tomorrow to finalize plans for his homecoming,” revealed his mother about a planned hero’s welcome for the 400m ace. “He has represented his family, Lotlhakane East, Botswana, and Africa with distinction, and we’re excited to celebrate his achievements,” Joyce added proudly about her son.
