Celeb Edition with Donald Molosi

MAKING MOVES: Molosi

With all that he has achieved, it is hard to believe that Donald Molosi is still only 34.

Molosi bears a striking resemblance to Botswana’s first President, Sir Seretse Khama and, like his famous doppelganger, has done much to put the country on the global map.

From starring on Broadway to the big screen, to writing his own hard-hitting plays and novels, Molosi is truly a man of many talents.

Q. How’s lockdown treating you?

Well outside of being glued to the TV set for the latest on Covid-19 trends, I have been busy with my creative consultancy.

I still have to meet and discuss ideas with clients so we have had lots – and I mean lots – of Zoom meetings! Outside of work, I also caught up on reading.

Q. Once lockdown is finally lifted, what’s the first thing you intend to do?

The first thing I am going to do after lockdown is to go for a walk or jog outside the yard.

I have missed that.

This is something I have never really quite appreciated until I was not allowed to do!

Who would have thought in this lifetime we would experience such?

Q. What is the one thing this lockdown has taught you?

This lockdown has re-shown me the bitter truth that the failure by Botswana government to decolonize the African classroom means that our curriculum cannot be taught online.

But I guess it is a topic that needs an open debate.

Q. Any new projects coming up?

Yes. Sadly I had to postpone the filming of my new film but it will resume filming around October.

I’m quite excited about the project and would have really hoped to have it done by the year end.

Q. You are a well-travelled man – which country have you visited that remains close to your heart?

I love Morocco a lot and the people’s warm hearts reminds me of the welcome I always receive in Tanzania and Taiwan.

Like Botswana, they are also my homes.

Q. If you had one superpower, what would it be?

I would wave my wand and make Coronavirus disappear and for the lessons learnt to be internalized by our leaders.

Q. Who is the last person you called?

Ummm, the last person I called was my friend Kaone Kario.

I wouldn’t want to get into what we discussed during the phone call.

Not for public consumption (laughing).

Q. What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

The first thing I do when I wake up is express gratitude for life through chanting.

Q. Five things people don’t know about you?

  • I am half Kalanga and half Ngwato
  • I grew up in Werda attending Werda Primary School
  • I like silence and meditation
  • I didn’t start dating until I was in my mid-twenties
  • My first film role was opposite Matt Damon
