FULFILLING A FANTASY: Sedio

Sibling fulfills fantasy with debut track

For Kanye-born Gospel singer, Maikutlo Sedio, the launch of her debut single was more than just a musical milestone, it was the fulfillment of a dream she once shared with her late sister.

The 36-year-old officially dropped, ‘Morena Re A Leboga (Lord, We Thank You)’ in her home village over the weekend, drawing both worshippers and music lovers for what she describes as a deeply spiritual and emotional experience.

Speaking to Voice Entertainment on the sidelines, Sedio reveals the song carries a message of gratitude and faith, reminding listeners of God’s unwavering presence through life’s highs and lows.

“The message is simple: God is good at all times. He is the one who gives us peace and comfort,” she explains.

Behind the uplifting track lies a touching story of sibling love and unfinished dreams.

Sedio and her late sister had long planned to record songs from a collection they had written together, only for a cruel twist of fate to intervene.

“My sister and I had a book of songs we wanted to record. Unfortunately, she became ill and we never got the chance to go into the studio together. My late sister inspired me greatly through her singing; when she passed on, I felt compelled to make her dream come true and honour her memory,” Sedio shares in a voice tinged with sadness amid the pride.

“The love I have for God and for music is what pushed me to pursue Gospel music seriously,” she adds.

Turning her attention to Saturday’s successful launch, Sedio admits it exceeded her wildest expectations.

“It was powerful. People were excited and they still can’t stop talking about it. Many told me they felt the power of God while I was ministering through song. Even now, I continue receiving messages from people sharing how they experienced God’s anointing during the launch.”

Divine inspiration is a phenomenon Sedio is no stranger to.

“I write my own songs. Most of the time they come to me in dreams; I wake up and write them down. I don’t struggle with songwriting. I see my music as a ministry. My music was created to bless people, not just to entertain them,” she notes, smiling as she speaks but with a steely look in her eye.

Like many Gospel artists in Botswana, navigating a music career has not been without its hiccups; Sedio cites a struggle to find the right mentors to guide her as one of the biggest bumps.

“The challenge has been finding relevant people who can teach me and show me how to promote my music so that more people can know about me,” she said.

Fortunately, she found the right friends to team-up with for ‘Morena Re A Leboga’.

The single was produced by renowned producer, Shepherd Mpofu, popularly known as SK Spiro, while backing vocals were provided by church companions: Michelle Kelapepelo, Abigail Keitsekgomo and Bontle Ignatious.

“These are people I grew up singing with in church. They understand music and ministry, which is why I wanted them to be part of this project,” she explains.

Keen to build on the weekend’s momentum, Sedio is already setting her sights on bigger things.

“I am planning to release a full album this year. The response to the single showed me that people were simply waiting for me to start recording professionally. I also want to organise ministry events where I can use my music to minister and bless people,” she reveals.
