Snooker game ends with bottle to the neck
As all snooker fanatics will testify, players take the game extremely seriously – for many, a winning streak can make or break their evening, especially when money is involved.
With pride, and often Pula, at stake, and alcohol usually added to the equation, tempers sometimes boil over.
This was the case at a Molepolole bar on Saturday night, when a dispute over the outcome of a tense pool match descended into bloody violence.
Police suspect the fall-out was sparked by a disagreement between the two players, with Bob Siane, 31, adamant he had won while his opponent, Moasesho Moroka insisted the match was not over.
After a brief back-and-forth, Siane is said to have lost his cool, allegedly smashing a 750ml quart bottle and plunging the broken glass into the other man’s neck.
Rushed to hospital, 22-year-old Moroka remains bed-ridden at Scottish Livingstone Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, with his condition believed to be critical.
Siane fled the scene but was tracked down and arrested by the boys in blue the next day.
Charged with grievous harm, the dreadlocked suspect was arraigned before Molepolole Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he saw his shot for immediate freedom snookered.
“I apply for bail. I’m caring for my younger siblings, one in Standard 6 and the other doing Form 2, my mother also needs help,” said Siane, a sob story that failed to secure his liberty.
In a brief interview, Lekgwapheng Station Commander, Mothosera Busang, revealed the fight broke out at Masa Bar at around 2330hrs.
“The duo were playing pool, in the process the accused claimed he won and the victim asked him how that was possible since they were still playing. The accused then went to call his friends and when they were still trying to intervene and separate the two men, the accused broke the bottle and stabbed the victim on the neck,” disclosed the Superintendent.
Remanded in custody, Siane’s next mention is set for 9 July; he’ll be out of action from the pool table for a while, as will his alleged victim.
