Hon. Nyambe keeps his promise

The City of Francistown Council (COFC) Leader of Opposition (LOO) and Mophane Ward Councilor, Thabo Nyambe, has partnered with BotswanaPost to deliver a fully functional office to the residents of Mophane and Gerald Estates.

Nyambe, one of six councilors from the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) elected in the 2024 General Elections, has honoured his campaign promise to bring essential services closer to his constituents. After three failed attempts, he finally secured a council seat on his fourth try.

“I first contested in 2009 when I was 26 years old under the BCP ticket. I’ve never changed parties, and I believe that loyalty was rewarded by the people of Mophane Ward in the last general elections,” Nyambe told The Voice ahead of his much-anticipated ward office launch and victory celebration, set for August 23.

He said that, like any visionary leader, he had a clear roadmap, and one of his key campaign messages was the importance of councilors having operational offices that constituents can easily access.

“We should not be ‘car officers’ or expect voters to come to our homes, where we live behind high walls, electric gates, and vicious dogs. There should be a designated place where people can come for information and assistance,” he explained.

Nyambe said the new office will also offer BotswanaPost services, including car registration renewals.

“People in Gerald have suffered for too long, walking over 10 kilometres just to buy a stamp. This office will be a one-stop service provider for many needs,” said the Mophane Ward Councilor.

Among the planned services is internet access, aimed particularly at empowering the youth.

To officially launch the office and celebrate his hard-fought victory, Nyambe has invited BCP Vice President and Member of Parliament for Bobonong, Taolo Lucas, as the guest of honour.

He added that popular funeral parlours such as Kagiso and Thusanyo have been engaged to use the office for selling their products.

“It’s a work in progress, but their agents can visit once a month so that residents can pay their subscription fees. It’s all about delivering services to the people,” he emphasized.

Nyambe said the celebration is not just about party politics, but about inclusivity and community unity.

“That’s why I’ve informed the party office that I don’t want attendees wearing party merchandise. The ward has many civil servants who are apolitical but will still attend the event,” he said.

A devoted member of the St John Apostolic Faith Mission, Nyambe noted that party regalia can sometimes alienate people.

“I’ve invited church groups and choirs that aren’t affiliated with any political party,” he said.

He also revealed that Francistown Academic Hospital (FAH) will be present on the day to offer free health screenings for attendees.

Nyambe, known as one of the most outspoken councilors, is currently at the forefront of opposition efforts to take the Council to court for failing to adhere to its Standing Orders.

He and his fellow councilors argue that the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC)-led council has violated Standing Order 5.2, which mandates that committee appointments be based on cross-sectional representation from all political parties.
