A 25-year-old woman and her 11-year-old nephew are fighting for their lives at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital with serious injuries following a brutal attack by a soldier who went berserk early this morning attacking his baby mama and her family with a machete at Francistown’s Maipaafela location.

According to Tatitown Police Station Commander Superintendent Boipuso Baatweng, the soldier who is stationed in Selebi-Phikwe was arrested on Saturday night following a report by his girlfriend.

“We received a report from a lady aged 25 saying she and her family were under attack from her 31-year-old boyfriend,” he said.

The Station Commander said when they rushed to the scene (boyfriend’s place) they found three people injured.

“It appears the man was using a log or some sort of a knobkerrie, and in the process injured his girlfriend, her elder sister and uncle,” Baatweng told Voice Online.

“Both the man and woman are from Maipaafela location and are actually neighbours, living just 400m apart,” revealed Baatweng.

The Tatitown police Station Commander said the perpetrator then vanished into the night, with his six year old step son, and seven month-old son.

“He was apprehended near Area W BDF Camp, and taken to a police cell, where he faced two counts of Assault Occasioning Actual bodily harm, and one for assault common,” Batweeng said.

The top cop said, the cornered soldier bared his soul and complained about his baby mama’s cheating ways, claiming that the young mum spent the previous night away.

According to Baatweng, the man was released from the police cell on Monday at around 10am, and was supposed to face his charges in court.

“Unfortunately, this morning at around 7am, we received a call from someone reporting that a man was attacking people with a machete in Maipaafela. When the police arrived, he had already left the scene, and the police went hunting for him,” he said.

Baatweng said not long after leaving the crime scene they received a call notifying them that the fugitive was found hanging from the rafters of his house in Maipaafela.

“The girlfriend was transferred to Nyangabgwe with a deep cut on the neck, while her 11 year old nephew was also admitted with a serious gash on the head,” he said.

Other victims of the deadly attack include the baby mama’s 43 year old aunt, and a 10 year old boy who had a head and shoulder injuries respectively.

The two were however treated and discharged at the Area W Clinic.
