BDF awards 217 soldiers in Francistown
Last Thursday, 217 soldiers were recognized and honored for their loyalty, courage, and dedication to both the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and the nation.
In a ceremony filled with pride and pomp at the Francistown Donga Barracks, the BDF presented these brave men and women with distinguished medals.
The awards included the Long Service Order, Foreign Service Medals, and Pearl Jubilee Medals.
Long Service awards are awarded to soldiers who have served the army with distinction for 15 years, while the Pearl Jubilee Medal honors those who have dedicated 30 years to the BDF.
Foreign Service Medals are awarded to personnel deployed outside Botswana for two months or more.
One recipient, Corporal Innocent Setilo, shared his experience with The Voice: “I was stationed in Mozambique for eight months. I went there in 2023 and returned last year. I am grateful to receive this award, as it recognizes the trust placed in me by the President and the BDF Commander. My duty was to offer protection in Mozambique,” said Setilo, a bright smile spreading across his face as he gazed at his shiny medal.
Corporal Tshepo Moleti, who joined the BDF in 2010, expressed his pride: “Serving for 15 years demonstrates my love and honor in protecting my country.”
Another veteran, Pearl Jubilee recipient Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Mphoeng Ragalase, reflected on the significance of the moment: “This medal represents my 30 years of service to Botswana with passion and dedication. It is a milestone I will cherish forever.” An emotional Ragalase shared his sentiments.
The Award Ceremony, one of the most significant events in the BDF calendar, was introduced in 1977. It is held annually to motivate, encourage, and reward soldiers for their commitment and service.
