RAISING AWERENESS: Walkers taking part in the annual Y Care Marokolwane Farm walk

All proceeds go to Autism Botswana

The annual Y-Care Trust Marokolwane Pre-walk returns in two weeks’ time as organisers and sponsors anticipate another successful charitable event.

Held in honour of the late publisher of The Voice newspaper and human rights activist, Beata Kasale-Kabango, the walk which is a collaboration of Y-Care, The Voice Newspaper and Autism Botswana will be held on March 25th at Marokolwane Farms.

The walk will start at 6am and registration can be done on Y-Care website www.ycare.org.bw/registration. The registration fee is P100. All proceeds will go to Autism Botswana.

Outlining the objectives of the walk, The Voice Newspaper Managing Director, Gomolemo Marc Kasale said they were approached by Y-care a year after the death of the company’s publisher Kasale-Kabango to start this event. He said this was because she was one of the few who sponsored the charity walks when Y-care was established.

“Y-care wanted to honour her by having one of their pre-walks done at Marokolwane Farms which was her residence. We found it fit to collaborate with them taking into consideration the work she has done, especially when it comes to changing people’s lives and improving their lives. It has been an exciting journey we have had in this partnership for the past 5 years and hoping for many more as we continue to honour her and ensure her legacy lives on. The proceeds will all go to Autism Botswana because this a condition that we feel there is a need to raise awareness on,” said Kasale

For his part Y-Care Coordinator Sarona Moabi said their first Makgadikgadi walk was in 2003 and the late Kasale-Kabango was one of the organisers and that’s how far the relationship has come. He said the partnership with the newspaper has helped their organization to spread the message whenever they have charity walks.

Moabi said participants in the Marokolwane walk should be prepared for a bushy amd sandy terrain and and therefore dress appropriately with running or hiking boots.

Autism Botswana Project Officer Intlafatso Evelyn Kwapa said the mandate of their organisation is advocating for individuals with autism. She said before it was formed children with the condition were not admitted in schools but they are now in different special units.

“This is a neuro developmental disability that affects how one communicates, how they interact socially and how they see the world around them. Last year we partnered with Y-care through The Voice Newspaper. This walk comes a month before autism month and we use the proceeds we get for the commemoration and for an awareness drive,” said Kwapa
