Masunga Police Station Commander, Superintendent Raymond Gabothulwe, has warned of car hijacking syndicates that involve locals and foreign nationals.
In an interview with The Voice, following a successful recovery of a white Toyota Hilux GD6 in neighbouring Zimbabwe, Gabothulwe said it has come to their attention that Batswana are involved in these carjackings.
Gabothulwe appealed to members of the public to be vigilant at all times, and report any suspicious movements.
“Cases of car hijackings are becoming more frequent, members of the public should be vigilant because these hijackers are armed and dangerous,” he said.
Gabothulwe was speaking after a employee of Pula Consultancy Road Construction and his girlfriend were attacked and robbed of property worth P10 000 and a motor vehicle in Mlabakwena
According to Gabothulwe, the 41-year-old driver was attacked by three men at around 01:30hrs while he had stepped out of his house to take a breather.
‘They pounced on him, brandishing what looked like a pistol. They dragged him inside the house and ordered the girlfriend to remain under covers,” said Gabothulwe.
The Masunga Police boss told The Voice that the criminals ransacked the house and stole two cellphones, microwave, a Techcno television set and locked the shaken couple inside before driving away in the GD6.
“Fortunately, the car was fitted with a tracking device and we monitored their movements. They cut the border fence at Moroka and drove through Plumtree and stopped at Masenda-Madlambuzi in Zimbabwe,” he said.
Gabothulwe said they then communicated with their Zimbabwean counterparts who pounced on the unsuspecting trio.
“Two suspects fled, but they managed to arrest one, and we are currently working on the extradition process,” he said, adding that it was fortunate that no one was injured. He warned the public to be vigilant at all times.
