Social Club build house for Tonota family
In their efforts to show poverty the red card, Sunday Soccer side, Superdoom Social Club scored the most important goal in their 26-year history on Saturday.
The football lovers, made up of teachers from Shashe River Senior Secondary School, handed over a two-roomed house they built for a struggling family in Tonota’s Borotsi ward.
The extended Willie clan, who number 23 relatives in total, will sleep a little easier at night thanks to the extra accommodation in their yard.
Constructed to the tune of just over P40, 000, the dwelling was built in super quick time, with the ground breaking only conducted on 24 September.
“Since then, we have not looked back!” declared Superdoom’s proud Chairman, Mokotedi Phitshane, who revealed the club was founded in 1996, earning their name after they thrashed a BDF Donga officer’s team called ‘Cockroaches’.
He explained the donation was in keeping with the club’s constitution, which covers social responsibility and uplifting the lives of those in need.
“We are very determined to help the vulnerable!” he stressed, adding in the past they have given P20, 000 worth of sanitary pads to Shashe River SSS.
Phitshane said the idea to build a house was birthed in November last year when they were playing against Mmadinare Senior.
“After the game, they went to show us the house they were building. It took them two years to build and complete the house; we took two months!” he joked, showing his competitive side.
“We visited the family early this year and we told them we will build a house for them; they were very emotional when we told them that and we are very excited that today we put a smile on their faces,” concluded the Chairman.
Accepting the handover, an emotional Gababoelwe Willie beamed with pure joy.
“May God bless them, this club really changed my life! I will be able to sleep peacefully and it will give me and my family dignity. In the village, people were calling me with names because I did not have a smart house; now they will be my friends,” said Gababoelwe, adding there were those in the village worse off than her who were also in desperate need of a guardian angel.
“Some don’t even have shelter. Those out there in a position to help should follow Superdoom’s example; it makes the world of difference!”
For his part, the school’s Deputy School, George Showa, described Superdoom, which also has volleyball and netball teams, as a huge source of pride to Shashe River.
“I urge the club to continue with the good initiative that they are doing for people and not to lose interest as many people are living in difficulties,” Showa said.
Invited guest speaker, Tonota Station Commander, Oteng Ngada noted a house was a basic need in life that one cannot live without.
“The children now will be able to sleep well and will perform better at school,” said the top cop, who encouraged the Willies to take care of the house so that it can sustain them for many years to come.
“The Superdoom’s should not turn their backs on the house either but must keep on coming back to check on it. Continue with these kind gestures, you are making a huge difference to the community,” praised Ngada.
As well as the house, the family also received food hampers from Tonota Social Club.
