Police hunt for Maun street killers

Two men were brutally attacked and left for dead by unknown assailants in separate incidents in Maun in the past two weeks.

One of them succumbed to his injuries, while the other is fighting for his life in hospital.

Maun police station commander, Superintendent Dennis Zilawe, confirmed the incidents and said they were investigating a case of murder and another of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He said the first incident occurred on November 14th at Boseja route 9 area, where a 41-year-old Zimbabwean man was found lying in the street with head injuries. He was discovered by passersby who alerted the police.

“He was taken to Letsholathebe II Memorial hospital in Maun, but he could not speak due to the injuries. He was later transferred to Nyangabwe referral hospital in Francistown on November 19th, but he was pronounced dead on arrival,” Zilawe said.

He said the motive of the attack was still unknown and no suspects had been arrested yet.

The second incident happened on November 26th at Maun old mall, near a night club, where a 26-year-old man from Boseja-Kubung ward in Maun was beaten up and left unconscious by unknown assailants.

He had wounds on his face and legs.

“A security officer recognised him and called his sister, who rushed to the scene and took him to hospital. He is still in a critical condition at Letsholathebe II Memorial hospital,” Zilawe said.

He appealed to the public to assist the police with any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

“We urge anyone who witnessed these attacks or has any information that could help us to contact Maun police station or any nearest police station. We also advise the public to avoid walking alone at night and to report any suspicious activities to the police,” he said.
