An after Independence sundowner at Mankgodi dam ended tragically for a 47-year-old man.
The Zimbabwean national residing in Kumakwane drowned on Sunday when his makeshift plastic canoe capsized and sunk deep into the water.
The deceased was in the company of eight others, when he met his fate in what was supposed to be an afternoon of fun on the breezy banks of the popular dam.
According to Thamaga Police Station Commander Superintendent Moses Kwarare, after others made a unanimous decision not to swim as they perceived the water to be dirty, the deceased determined to have his fun in the water went for the plastic canoe.
Unfortunately for him, the floatable capsized as he attempted to step in, taking him down into the dam.
“His friends tried everything they could to rescue him and failed,” said Kwarare.
The Station Commander said they then phoned the police who immediately rushed to the scene.
“The scuba divers jumped in and raked the dam’s basement and eventually retrieved his body. He was then rushed to the hospital where the doctor certified him dead,” said Superintendent Kwarare who further revealed that the post mortem was conducted this on Wednesday.
