Rehabilitation Centre Principal admits assaulting colleague
Used to dealing with ‘difficult’ children, the Principal of Ikago Rehabilitation Centre now finds himself heading to the ‘naughty corner’ after he admitted assaulting a female colleague with a table.
Appearing before Molepolole Magistrates Court last Wednesday, 50-year-old Bathoni Teko pleaded guilty to common assault.
With facts reading scheduled for next Wednesday, the school head faces a possible year in prison if court sees fit to throw the book at him.
In a brief interview, Lekgwapheng Station Commander, Mothosera Busang, told The Voice the fall-out occurred during a heated staff meeting just after lunch on Tuesday 15 July.
“We do not have the details of the meeting. It has been reported that the duo had a misunderstanding and exchanged some words. The accused then allegedly pushed the table to the complainant, injuring her. She went to seek medical attention from the hospital where she was treated and discharged,” disclosed the Superintendent.
Upon receiving the report, the police confronted the duo and charged Teko; however, because the complainant only sustained minor injuries, the accused was not detained in the police holding cells.
Indeed, during last week’s arraignment, the Magistrate questioned state’s decision to bring the matter to his court, suggesting Customary Court would have been more suitable.
In response, the police said they were acting on the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) advice.
