*BNFYL gears up for historic Kang congress

As excitement builds for their congress in Kang, Botswana National Front Youth League (BNFYL) president, Thatayaone Mosimakoko, has hailed the growing energy and political awakening among the youth.

Speaking to this publication ahead of the weekend event, Mosimakoko said that as they prepare for the congress they have realised that more youth are increasingly becoming attracted to the BNF.

“I think the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has made the BNF more attractive. For a long time we have been having not more than 32 constituencies registering but now we have 61 who have registered and paid their delegation fees to show their participation.”

Mosimakoko said that it will be their first time to hold a congress of this magnitude for the youth league. Mosimakoko, who is also Mogoditshane/Thamaga District Council Deputy Chair, thanked the presidential candidates for having displayed a high level of maturity during campaigns. He however said that they want a new leader with a new mandate that aligns with the youth struggles and with the vision of a new republic that is fair, just and inclusive.

“We don’t want youth who are only foot soldiers, we also need strategic thinkers, policy drivers and builders of an alternative future.” He said that they want the youth to understand that they are not only the future leaders but also current change agents.

“We want them to re-imagine Botswana in the area of job creation through green and digital economy, ethical governance and participatory democracy, land ownership, entrepreneurship and justice.”

Mosimakoko said that his belief is that a re-imagined Botswana demands bold, unshaken but grounded vision of youths. Those vying for the YL Presidency are Carter Joseph, Melvin Kedise and Tumelo Legase. The congress will be the first with BNF in power through the UDC.
