STARS IN THE MAKING: Youngsters in training

Youngsters with energy to burn are in for a treat this weekend as Bokamoso Junior Basketball Academy bounces into Francistown on Saturday for its official launch at John Mackenzie School (JMS).

Scheduled to start at 9:30am, the event is billed as a day of fun and exercise for the whole family under the theme ‘Making Sport A Lifestyle’.

The Academy aims to inspire youth aged from 5 to 17 to not just grow in the world of basketball but also to provide them with the necessary support to play sports, excel in academics and develop a ‘can do’ attitude in life.

Founded by sporting couple, Katlego and Tshepo Matenge, the b/ball venture has received much support from the second city’s business community as well as her civil leadership.

Once fully up-and running, the Academy will offer basketball activities for kids on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons at JMS Courts, under the expert eye of Katlego, an International Basketball Federation (FIBA) accredited coach who spent six years in Cuba through the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) elite scholarship.

The activities started this Thursday (13 July) and will reach a climax on Saturday, with live coverage from The Voice, and attendance from dignitaries such as MP, Billy Buti, and a team from Dreamweb Marketing (Pty) Ltd.

Speaking to Voice Sport through the week, Katlego revealed they intend to plant a basketball seed that will grow and produce more seedlings in Francistown.

“Our primary schools here don’t offer basketball lessons; we are here to bridge that gap!” she declared, her husband nodding in vigirous agreement.

Katlego is of the view that as a BNSC elite scholarship beneficiary, she has to show her gratitude by ploughing back all she has learnt.

Entrance to Saturday’s launch is absolutely free, and well worth a look.
