Ngamiland continues to take a lead as a hub of tourism activities and an ultimate destination of choice among travellers.

The district’s tourism town, Maun, which is a gateway to a world heritage site, Okavango Delta, is particularly popular among domestic tourists who flock the town every holiday for leisure and festivities.

Maun Administration Authority (MAA) chairperson, Vepaune Moreti says since the government relaxed COVID-19 protocols, Maun has been receiving many domestic tourists who are seemingly hungry to explore and enjoy the district especially Maun.

“During the past holidays in April, 2022, Maun was blessed to play host to the Mascom Derby which was complimented by other festivals during the long weekend holidays.,” Moreti noted.

The council chairman further explained that during the festivities that took place during Easter holidays, majority of hotels, lodges and guest houses reported one hundred percent occupancy rate and thereby boosting the local economy and tourism value chain.

“The organisation (Mascom) also managed to sponsor the media coverage of the Mascom derby to ensure that Maun is documented in all media platforms to encourage more tourists to visit our beautiful village,” added Moreti.

Popular for its wild night life, boat cruises, game drives, horse rides, diverse culture, food cuisines, motor sports and music festivals amongst a line up many other activities, Maun is known as a destination of fun; Maun ka monate.

At international level Moreti indicated that Botswana tourism operators did very well at the last World Travel Market held in CapeTown; South Africa where out of eleven operators representing Botswana, seven were from Ngamiland, “And I am proud to inform the house that Botswana won the Best stand for doing business during the event,” Moreti said.

The three-day event was held from 11-13th April 2022.

“At this year’s tourism operators Indaba in Durban, held from 2nd-5th May 2022, Botswana Tourism had a total of twenty-seven operators participating at the event and 14, which is slightly above 50% of the participants representing Botswana were from the Ngamiland district,” said Moreti further expressing his pride when he talks above Ngamiland’s achievements.

Meanwhile Botswana also participated in the WE ARE AFRICA show in CapeTown, held from 17th-20th May 2022 in which Ngamiland district had a total of 13 operators represented.
