Inline with their Ubuntu/Botho slogan, Mamelodi Sundowns Family supporters in Botswana donated food hampers and toiletries to a 68-year-old breast cancer survivor in Francistown Gerald Estates on Saturday.
The National Officer-Supporters Department; Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Peggy Jeremiah said they recently donated P12 000 to the Covid-19 Fund through a cheque that was delivered to the Office of the President.
“As Sundowns family, we commemorate special events and occasions like the Youth month, Nelson Mandela Day, and Cancer Awareness Days. Today we chose to put a smile on someone’s face instead of celebrating alone,” she said.
Jeremiah said they chose a breast cancer patient because they realise that they need love, socializing, and acceptance as well as motivation to win the battle.
In an interview with Voice Sport, the thankful survivor who wanted to remain anonymous said she was diagnosed with cancer this year in June.
“I have been feeling a sharp pain in my breast since 2016. It was only after I went for testing in December last year that the results came out positive,” she said.
She said besides the dryness in her throat and a nagging pain after every chemotherapy session, she is fine most of the time.
In his welcome remarks Moselewapula councilor, Reuben Ketlhoilwe who’s also a cancer survivor said, he battled with the chronic disease for 16 years, before finally receiving a clean bill of health.
He told an attentive gathering that he was diagnosed with colon cancer which then affected his urinary tract, rectum and bladder.
“It was hard but I managed to fight it as you can see I’m strong now. The best medicine for cancer is early detection and treatment. Exercising, avoiding stress, following the doctor’s instructions and being careful with what one is eating are also critical in the fight against cancer,” said Ketlhoilwe.
Masandawana as they normally call it is one of the most successful and teams in Africa.
Under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane who has since joined Egyptian side, Al Ahly Sundowns bagged a treble last season, winning the Absa Premiership, Telkom Knockout, and the Nedbank Cup.
