KKRP takes shape as completed projects are handed over

The Kasane–Kazungula Redevelopment Project (KKRP), a P423 million wholly government funded initiative, is well on course.

The KKRP is a tourism diversification project aimed at establishing Kasane and Kazungula as major international and domestic tourism hubs, while also helping to diversify Botswana’s tourism product and reduce its reliance on the luxury wildlife market.

Under the KKRP, government plans to upgrade or build a number of facilities in the area, including the relocation of the prison to Pandamatenga and Chobe Brigade.

One of the key achievements has been the successful completion of a 16-million-litre-per-day water treatment plant, the Institutional Office Block, and the Government Fleet Management (GFM) workshop and fuel station.

On Tuesday, Minister of Environment and Tourism Wynter Mmolotsi officially opened and handed over the Institutional Office Building and GFM Workshop, built at a combined cost of P166 million.

The office building, whose construction commenced on 21 August 2023, was awarded to Landmark Projects (Pty) Ltd at a cost of P93 million and was completed on 13 December 2025.

The contractor also constructed 30 prefabricated houses in Kazungula to facilitate the demolition of houses previously located on the office site in Kasane.

The office block will accommodate government offices currently being relocated from the riverfront to free up prime land for tourism investment by Batswana.

Speaking at the official opening and handover ceremony, Minister Mmolotsi said that when government conceived the KKRP, it had three key objectives of relocating properties to release prime land for investment in new tourism products; improving the environment and infrastructure to make the area more attractive as a place to visit, live, and do business; and diversifying the product offering to increase the average length of stay and attract new markets.

“The towns of Kasane and Kazungula occupy a key strategic position in northern Botswana, at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe rivers, where they serve as the main gateway into Botswana for the high-spending foreign visitor market,”
Mmolotsi said.

He added that the towns are also at the heart of the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), a region that includes, among its goals, the introduction of a single tourist visa for its five member countries.
