Fury erupted in court on Tuesday after it emerged prosecutors initially did not oppose bail for four men accused of a savage Valentine’s Day murder.
The explosive revelation came during a tense hearing before Magistrate Kefilwe Resheng at Village Magistrate Court, where Lucky Dichaba (31), Kamogelo Setuke (32), Thabo Mafoko (25) and Baitshupi Maatla (33) stand accused of a brutal killing.
The quartet allegedly beat Tutu Jonathan Lekgoa (39), of Molepolole, to death in a horror attack that has shocked the community.
In a chilling picture painted during court proceedings, Lekgoa was allegedly hunted down on February 14th, mercilessly assaulted and left with devastating head and facial injuries, along with broken arms and legs.
In a harrowing testimony, the victim’s brother Bokamoso told how the attackers allegedly stripped Lekgoa, wrapped his battered body in a blanket and dumped him at the emergency entrance of Princess Marina Hospital.
Detective Sergeant Pilane revealed two suspects were arrested the next day, with two more picked up days later. But the hunt is still on for two others including wanted man Kitsoyaone Chawilane, 37 believed to have fled to Eswatini.
Interpol has now been roped in to track him down.
Magistrate Resheng did not hold back, expressing shock that the State had earlier indicated it would not oppose bail in such a serious case.
She warned the Bail Act must be properly applied and stressed victims’ families have a right to be heard.
“The provisions of the Bail Act must be properly understood and applied to ensure justice is served,” she said.
In a dramatic turnaround, prosecutors have now reversed their position and are fighting bail, warning the accused could interfere with witnesses as crucial DNA evidence is also still outstanding.
Tempers flared in court when one accused was scolded for laughing during proceedings, while investigators said none of the men had shown any remorse.
All four told the court they would relocate from Block 8 if released.
The case has been adjourned to March 24, when a ruling on bail is expected.
Meanwhile, a grieving family and three children left without a father wait for answers as police race to catch the remaining suspects.
