The Botswana Defence Force (BDF) has confirmed the deaths of two service members who died under unexplained circumstances this week.

A Sergeant and a Staff Sergeant passed away on Monday and Tuesday respectively at the 2 Brigade Group in Donga, Francistown, sparking concern and wild rumours of possible poisoning.

Responding to questions from The Voice, BDF Director of Protocol and Public Affairs, Lieutenant Colonel Fana Maswabi, confirmed investigations are underway to determine the causes of death.

“The BDF extends its sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased service members during this difficult period. The loss of our members is deeply felt throughout the Defence Force,” said Lt Col Maswabi.

The BDF spokesperson appealed to the public and the media to respect the privacy and dignity of the bereaved families as they mourn their loved ones.

He also urged restraint regarding speculation and the circulation of unverified information.

“The BDF remains committed to keeping the public informed and will provide further information through the appropriate channels as and when it becomes available,” Maswabi assured The Vocie on Wednesday afternoon.

The deaths have generated significant discussion on social media, with various claims and conspiracy theories circulating. Among the allegations are reports that both men experienced severe vomiting shortly before their deaths. However, authorities have not confirmed this.

The Donga BDF Camp has endured several tragic incidents involving service members in recent years. In October last year, an on-duty soldier was found dead in his flat. In 2023, two soldiers, including a 39-year-old Lance Corporal, died by suicide. Another officer also took his own life using a service rifle in 2021.
