BDF Cheetahs and Jwaneng gear up for historic 15s clash

In their efforts to try and grow the sport, Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) are gearing up for a historic weekend with the first-ever women’s 15-a-side game to be played in the country.

Saturday’s landmark clash sees BDF Cheetahs take on Jwaneng in an exhibition, one-off fixture set for Livingstone College’s LKC Grounds at 2:00pm.

Previously women’s matches in the country have been limited solely to the 7s format.

The milestone signals a major leap forward in the growth and evolution of rugby in Botswana, aligning the local game with regional standards and opening new pathways for player development.

BRU Vice President Technical, Elijah Kokoro, described the moment as the realisation of a long-held vision.

“For many years, the Union has envisioned the establishment of a structured women’s 15s game, and it is with great pride and excitement that this dream is now becoming a reality,” he declared.

The transition to the 15s format is part of a broader strategic effort to enhance the technical depth of the sport, while providing players with expanded opportunities to develop and compete at higher levels.

Across Southern Africa, countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia have already established thriving women’s 15s competitions, with Botswana positioning itself to join this progressive movement and strengthen its presence on the regional rugby stage.

“The Botswana Rugby Union remains fully committed to supporting clubs, players, coaches, match officials, and administrators throughout this transition. The Union recognizes the dedication and sacrifices made by all stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to bring women’s rugby to this important moment,” added Kokoro, calling on the public to be part of the groundbreaking occasion.

“Their support will be instrumental in inspiring the next generation of female rugby players and strengthening the future of the women’s game in Botswana,” he said.

Kokoro emphasised that the significance of the match goes beyond the scoreboard.

“This weekend’s fixture is more than just a rugby match; it is the beginning of a new era for women’s rugby in Botswana!”
