What began as a routine motshelo gathering filled with laughter, drinks and camaraderie ended in tragedy after a man was allegedly stabbed to death during a violent altercation in Lewang lands, between Ditshegwane and Moshaweng Villages in the Kweneng District.
Police in Letlhakeng are investigating the shocking incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning and has left residents reeling. A 21-year-old man from Hatsalatadi is currently in police custody in connection with the killing.
According to Letlhakeng deputy station commander Assistant superintendent Lekopanye Molantwa, both the deceased and the suspect were members of a cooperative society, commonly known as a motshelo, where members take turns hosting social gatherings at their homes to share among themselves money they have been saving while enjoying traditional beverages.
It is alleged that trouble erupted while members were enjoying themselves at one of the hosts' residences. What started as a misunderstanding between the two men reportedly escalated into a heated confrontation before turning physical.
In the midst of the chaos, the younger man allegedly armed himself with a knife, chased and stabbed the victim on the left side of the neck.
The injured man collapsed and succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was rushed to the clinic for medical attention where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and remains behind bars as investigations continue. Police are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation.
“We are yet to determine what could have caused the argument, the family of the deceased has identified him” said Molwantwa.
The incident adds to a growing list of alcohol-fuelled disputes ending in bloodshed, raising fresh concerns about violence at social gatherings.
