Serial rapist leaves a trail of devastation and sorrow

Convict has five pending rape cases

The recapture of convicted rapist Boitumelo Selema by residents of Molalatau and the police last Tuesday brought an end to seven days of terror and uncertainty for women in and around Selebi-Phikwe and the Bobirwa area.

The 34-year-old escaped from Selebi-Phikwe Prison on 15th July and is suspected to have gone on a crime spree, breaking into homes, stealing property, and allegedly sexually assaulting a woman.

Selema was serving a 10-year sentence for rape when he escaped from prison on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, around 11:45 am. He wasted no time in wreaking havoc, allegedly breaking into a house in Tshokwe village, where he is suspected to have sexually assaulted the occupant.

In an interview with The Voice, Assistant Commissioner of Police Near Bagali confirmed that Selema is linked to a rape he case allegedly committed while he was on the run.

He’s also suspected of breaking into a house, stealing a blanket, and planting a stolen cellphone at the scene in an attempt to derail investigations.

“Besides the charge of unlawful escape from custody, there is an additional charge of rape and two counts of housebreaking and theft,” Bagali said

Bagali added that Selema now has five pending rape cases, including one in Bobonong and three others in Tsabong.

A native of Bobonong’s Borotsi ward, Selema was finally recaptured after an intensive manhunt involving multiple security agencies and strong support from the public, ending his seven-day reign of terror.
