Hallelujahs and Amens turned into high pitched wails of grief and anguish as two church members drowned during a baptism ceremony in Ramotswa last week.
The incident is said to have occurred last Thursday evening at around 7pm at Notwane River when the new church members aged 18 and 28 tragically met their fate.
Ramotswa Station Commander Superintendent Keoagile Tau confirmed the incident.
He said they received the report on Thursday night but that there was nothing much they could do as it was already dark.
Superintendent Tau said they engaged the police scuba-divers to search for the victims on the following morning.
“Their bodies were recovered by the scuba divers on Friday. They were taken to the hospital where they were certified dead. According to the divers it is muddy under the water and they suspect the two got stuck. The information we got from the eight survivors is that one person drowned and the other one drowned after he jumped into the river trying to rescue him,” said Tau.
The Station Commander said no foul play is suspected and that other church members were just questioned and released.
He advised members of the public to take precautions whenever they conduct baptism in rivers or stagnant water sources.
