Girl, 14, burns down two huts after mum catches her stealing

A 14-year-old girl left Sojwe villagers in shock this week, allegedly setting fire to two huts after her mother reprimanded her for stealing money.

The incident occurred in Difetlhamolelo ward at around 4:00 PM on Tuesday, just after the teen’s 45-year-old mum had left the yard to sell vegetables.

Confirming the arson, Sojwe Station Commander, Superintendent Busang Malope, revealed there were no injuries, although property worth P19,000 was destroyed by the flames. The charred items included stock for the tuck shop, mattresses, blankets, clothes, water containers, and vegetables.

“It was reported that the mother didn’t close the tuck shop and the minor child got inside. Later the mother realized there was a shortage of around P200; it is believed the girl was hurt when the mother tried asking her about the money. She confronted the girl and left, leaving her at home. The houses burnt while the mother was away,” explained the police boss.

Startled neighbours called the mum after realizing her huts were burning.

According to Superintendent Malope, the troubled teenager has been left traumatized by the ordeal. “I cannot confirm if the girl will face a charge or not. We took her to the health practitioners since she could not speak; when you tried to talk to her, she just kept quiet,” revealed the top cop.
