Police have arrested a suspected 22-year-old rapist from Boseja ward in Maun believed to have been terrorising women and girls in the tourism town, especially those who cross Thamalakane river by foot.

Maun police Station Commander, Dennis Zilawe, noted that they are still investigating the matter and that the suspect has been charged with at least four counts of the several rape incidents that have been reported since the beginning of the year, in particular from the month of February.

“It is true that we have made an arrest, but I cannot share the details as how or where he was arrested. What I can share is that the four cases that he has been linked to as for now happened along the river, that is the distance between the bridge behind Cresta Rileys hotel and the one near Maun Lodge,” explained Zilawe.

He further noted that of all the four cases, the rapist often targeted women and girls who were unaccompanied and walking in that area.

“We advice people to avoid walking alone especially in bushy and deserted areas,” Zilawe said, adding that the rape incidents took place randomly during the day: “Some happened in the morning and some in the afternoon.”

A few months back Zilawe reported that the police were on the hunt for a serial rapist who attacked women in their houses especially in the wee hours of the morning.

The suspect is expected to appear before a Maun magistrates court sometime this week.
