Cousin demands DNA test for Kgosi Malope II as royal dispute intensifies
A stormy court battle surrounding the legitimacy of Bangwaketse leadership took another dramatic turn today, with Kgosi Malope II challenged to undergo a DNA test.
Magistrate Keneilwe Kgoadi today (Thursday) postponed to April 9, 2026, the case involving Malope’s cousin, Metlhaeno Gaseitsewe, who stands accused of undermining the Bogosi Act.
Gaseitsewe is charged with violating Section 25(1) read together with Section 25(3) of the Bogosi Act of Botswana, a law that protects the dignity and authority of traditional leadership.
The case was postponed after defence lawyer Palesa Moletsane requested more time, explaining to the court that her co-counsel was unable to attend the proceedings.
But the postponement also revealed a new twist in the controversial matter.
Moletsane informed the court that the defence has filed an application seeking a DNA test from Kgosi Malope Gaseitsewe II, a move that could potentially determine questions surrounding the tribe’s royal lineage.
The charge stems from allegations that Gaseitsewe publicly questioned the legitimacy of the Bangwaketse leader, claiming that Kgosi Malope II does not have royal blood and lacks the qualities of a leader.
According to a charge sheet issued by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, the remarks were allegedly made during a kgotla meeting in Kanye on February 13, 2024.
The statements are said to have sparked outrage and led to criminal charges under the Bogosi Act.
With the defence now pushing for a DNA test, the case is expected to draw even more public attention when it returns to court next month.
