A nursing mother of a 10-month-old baby found herself on the wrong side of the law on Monday when she appeared before court charged with a single count of unlawful possession of dagga.

Lindiwe Dube, 27, a Zimbabwean national, was arrested last Thursday at her rented house in Themashanga village after police, acting on a tip-off, found her in possession of dagga.

In court, a visibly distressed Dube pleaded for bail, explaining that she is breastfeeding and the sole caregiver to three other children.

“I am the one taking care of my children as my boyfriend is nowhere to be found. My kids are aged six and eight, and I’m also looking after another child who was abandoned by the mother years ago,” pleaded Dube, regret written all over her face.

Her emotional appeal worked as State Prosecutor Tumalano Pobe informed the court that they had no intention of opposing Dube’s bail application.

The court then granted her bail on the condition that she pays P2000 and provides a Motswana surety who will bind themselves with P1 500. She must also attend court whenever required. She’ll be back in court for status hearing on 18th August.
