INSET: Mayor Radisigo is concerned at the mass exodus

City of Francistown Mayor, Godisang Radisigo has expressed concern over the mass exodus of nurses at Nyangagbwe Referral Hospital.

Speaking this week during a Full Council Session, Radisigo revealed that since November 2022, the hospital has already lost 23 nurses who have found greener pastures in the United Kingdom.

“Three nurses are currently serving notice while some are still finalizing their plans to leave the public service,” revealed the concerned Mayor, further stating that the development is greatly affecting operations and patient management.

However, the Mayor further said the Ministry is working on improving conditions of service, and that the adopted changes will be communicated in due course. “In the meantime, the ministry is recruiting all available nurses including retired ones to sustain continuity of services. We appeal to all eligible nurses who are available to apply so we can fill vacant positions,” he said.

The UK has mounted an aggressive recruitment drive of medical caregivers in the National Health Services (NHS).

This follows a sharp increase in NHS figures indicating that the number of empty posts in nursing across hospitals, mental health, community care and other services have reached 46 828 – the largest number ever.

Between April and June last year the NHS also saw a record number of over 35 000 staff members resigning, further exacerbating the situation, leaving the NHS needing over 50 000 nurses by the year 2024.
