Malatswai village was painted red on Thursday afternoon after an 82-year-old pensioner stabbed a 23-year-old woman in the chest with a spear.
The incident occurred around 16:30 at the elderly man’s home in Mabolongwe ward. Although the suspect and the deceased were not related, they both resided in the same ward.
In an interview with The Voice, Selibe-Phikwe Station Commander, Superintendent Oteng Poloko, confirmed the incident and said a misunderstanding had erupted after the elderly man had sent the woman and her boyfriend to buy him relish.
“When they returned from the shops without the relish, a dispute broke out. The situation was initially calmed, and the couple left. However, the now-deceased later returned alone, and the disagreement escalated, tragically ending in her death. We suspect a sharp object was used, likely a spear,” explained Poloko.
He added that the suspect is currently hospitalized at Sekgoma Memorial Hospital, having sustained serious injuries believed to have been inflicted by the deceased during the altercation.
“We are still investigating to determine the exact sequence of events,” said Poloko, who concluded by urging the public to resolve conflicts peacefully and avoid resorting to violence.
This marks the eleventh murder case recorded in the Serowe policing jurisdiction since the beginning of the year.
