Gumare Police are investigating an incident in which a 33-year-old man died in a freak gun accident while inspecting his fishing nets at Xhamotego Island in the Okavango Delta last week.
Superintendent Chenamo Orateng of Gumare Police Station, confirmed the incident noting that the deceased who originated from Shakawe and stayed at Ikoga village had gone fishing when he met his fate.
“He had a loaded gun and somehow it went off and the bullet struck him in the chest,” revealed Orateng.
Orateng noted that the victim was rushed to Gumare Primary Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival.
“We are still investigating, however our preliminary findings suggest that the gun was mistakenly fired,” Orateng said further noting that this is the second shooting incident recorded in his area and that the first was not fatal.
“We had a similar incident however the person only shot himself on the leg and therefore there was no fatality,” he revealed.
Orateng has advised gun owners to always handle the guns properly and keep their weapons in safe mode at all times.
“There is no need for you to keep a gun loaded with ammunition. The gun must always be in safe mode to avoid incidents like this one,” he said.
