Club dream big as First Division awaits

After a long, tough season ended with promotion to the Debswana First Division South, high-flying VTM FC will host an awards ceremony this Friday to celebrate their success.

The club, who play their home games at Gamononyame on the outskirts of the capital, triumphed in the Southern Block Promotional Play-Offs last month, winning three and drawing one of their four matches to progress to the second tier of local football.

This, after they blazed to victory in the Kweneng Division 1 League, scoring an incredible 93 goals and conceding just 14 times in 30 matches to finish with a goal difference of +79! Trailing Thamaga Shooting Stars by two points with six games of the season remaining, Bafana ba Dijabane ultimately cruised to the title, ending the season seven points above the Thamaga side.

Determined not to follow the norm, Mafutha stressed the club will not be making wholesale changes.

“This division is demanding, challenging and competitive. We are not going to make many changes but we will need at least three new players to beef up the squad as per the technical team request. Normally, when teams gain promotion, they hire new coaches and sign new players. There will be no changes on our technical team and we will keep both our coaches. We don’t want to pressurise ourselves, the aim is to maintain our status and challenge for the honours next season,” he stated.

Although they are remaining cautiously humble for now, Mafutha revealed the long-term plan is to be playing in CAF by 2036.

“We are dreaming big which is why we take football as a business. We want to develop and export players in order to generate revenue for the team. We want to improve our players’ welfare and have our own athletes’ village,” concluded the businessman-cum-football lover.

Friday’s awards include eight categories: Player of the season, Top goal scorer, Players’ player, Most disciplined player, Supporters’ player, Most improved, Young player of the season and Chairman’s award.
