Alumnus and Health Minister, Modise to officiate
Minister of Health Dr. Stephen Modise will give a keynote address at a special Commencement Ceremony for St. Georges University (SGU) School of Medicine.
Set for Gaborone on 27 June, the event will bring together graduates, families, healthcare leaders and government representatives.
The ceremony is a part of the Grenada-based university’s 50 th anniversary celebrations, honoring the academic achievements and professional contribution of SGU’s Botswana graduates to the regional healthcare landscape.
It serves as a formal recognition of over 130 Botswana physicians trained at the institution, many of whom now occupy critical roles within the Ministry of Health and private clinical practice.
This includes Dr. Modise himself, whose journey from medical student to one of the country’s top healthcare leaders reflects the impact SGU alumni continue to have.
SGU President and Dean, Dr. Marios Loukas said hosting this event in Gaborone reflects the importance of the African physician network and provides a localized platform for families and the domestic medical community to celebrate these milestones.

“As we celebrate 50 years of St. George’s University, we are proud to recognize the achievements of our graduates from Botswana and across Africa,” said Dr. Loukas.
“This ceremony provides an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments alongside their families, friends, and mentors, while acknowledging the important contributions they are making to healthcare in their communities and beyond,” he added.
Dr. Loulos noted the event offers an opportunity to many to participate in a formal graduation celebration closer to home, including those who were unable to attend similar ceremonies previously held in New York.
SGU has maintained a longstanding relationship with Botswana through the education and training of medical students over several decades.
The University continues to support aspiring physicians from the country through its international medical education programs and remains committed to expanding access to medical training opportunities for students from across Africa.
Joining Dr. Loukas at the ceremony will be Dr. Gaurov Dayal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Medforth Global Healthcare Education;Dr. Mark Clunes, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr.Maira Du Plessis, Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs; and Dr. Lindonne Telesford, Associate Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.
