DONE: Frontline workers being vaccinated

Frontline Covid-19 vaccinations begin in Zim

The Covid-19 vaccination programme for frontline workers kicked off on Monday and the doubts which seemed to linger about the Chinese vaccine have since disappeared.

With smiles on their faces, scores of people who have been vaccinated have since taken to social media to show off their vaccination cards, these include journalists who were later added to the list of essential workers.

This was after the Ministry of Information convinced cabinet that we are also an important lot.

I am yet to take my jab but it’s only a matter of time before I do since the programme is ongoing.

“Mass vaccination is our only hope of returning to normalcy…Vaccines have been proven to be safe and effective and have helped in eradicating pandemics since time immemorial. Happy to receive my Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine today,” tweeted Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights, Norma Matara on Monday.

Zimbabwe has been on lockdown since January 4 following a spike in cases after the festive season. As of February 23, the country had 35, 910 confirmed cases, 32, 288 recoveries and 448 deaths.

And while other people were focusing their attention on fighting the pandemic, the country’s Epidemiology and Disease Control Director, Portia Manangazira was seized with looting as much as she could from the Covid-19 funds.

I am sure she was inspired to loot by her superiors but unfortunately for her, she forgot that some animals are more equal than others. Others are exposed for looting and still get away with it while it becomes the end of the road for some.

She is currently behind bars for fraud and abuse of office as she allegedly abused funds close to a million dollars.

Manangazira reportedly recruited 28 relatives including her father to serve as community health workers tasked with raising Covid-19 awareness on behalf of the Health Ministry.

She allegedly went on to authorise procurement of goods and services without following due process, most probably giving the tenders to friends and relatives so she could get kickbacks.

Meanwhile, disgraced Vice President, Kembo Mohadi’s sexscapades continue to be talk of the town as a fourth audio of his conversation with yet another woman was leaked to the press.

The latest audio was of the 71-year-old politician talking of wanting to have a baby with the woman.

The woman in question, however, says having a baby is not a good idea but promises the VP ‘a good time’ when they meet.

With all these sex scandals tumbling out, there have been calls for Mohadi to step down.

It remains to be seen if he will leave office or life will go on for him as if he never slept around with young women, even in his office!
