A 26 -year -old man from Francistown, accused of murder and facing an additional charge of threatening to kill his girlfriend, was remanded in custody on Tuesday amid fears he would fulfil his ominous threat if granted bail.
Letlhogile Lenkokame, from Block 3, was out on bail charged with murdering his then-girlfriend, Lame Gagogosha in 2014, when his current girlfriend, Tshegofatso Mogotsi, accused him of threatening to kill her.
According to the state, Lenkokame told Mogotsi to find a rope so that he could tie her up, have sex with her, kill her and then take his own life.
Testifying before Magistrate, Dumisani Basupi, to support the state’s bid to keep Lenkokame locked up, Detective Sergeant Soba of the Francistown Criminal Investigation Department said, “The suspect has a murder case before the Department of Public Prosecutions in which he allegedly killed his girlfriend. We fear he may kill again.”
Regarding the threat to kill charge that Lenkokame faces, Soba said, “The accused in this case and the complainant are lovers and we fear he may kill her if he is granted bail.”
Magistrate Basupi consented to the state’s request, saying, “The accused has not opposed the application. The matter is fresh and the investigations must go on undisturbed.”
A stoic Lenkokame remained expressionless as he was denied bail, listening to the decision without displaying so much as a flicker of emotion.
In a strange turn of events, the charged man was later seen chatting, apparently amicably, with a smiling Mogotsi as he waited for police to transport him back to jail.
