Police have launched an attempted murder investigation after a newborn baby boy was discovered alive inside an unused pit latrine in Otse on Saturday (25 April) morning around 1100hrs.
According to Woodhall Station Commander, Goitsemang Sekgabo, the incident came to light when a local woman heard an infant crying from behind her house in Lesetlhana ward.
The woman traced the cries to an outside toilet in her yard and alerted neighbours to witness the situation before reporting the matter to Otse Police Post.
Superintendent Sekgabo said officers responded promptly and managed to rescue the baby from the latrine.
“The infant was rushed to Otse Clinic and later transferred to Bamalete Lutheran Hospital in Ramotswa for further medical care, but his health is currently stable”, added the top cop.
A 39-year-old woman from the area has since been identified as the suspect and taken to the hospital for examination.
“She is currently under police guard at the hospital. Our investigations are ongoing; we are still waiting for the paternity examination team to provide us with the results, to confirm if indeed the suspect is linked to the matter,” concluded Sekgabo.
