Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) has started construction of a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) aimed at enabling a greener technology-driven future.
The eco-friendly project, which is being built at the company’s offices in Gaborone, will be completed in two parts.
Phase One will see the construction of a renewable energy 350 Kilowatts peak (KWp) plant.
Speaking during the project launch last Thursday, DTCB Board member and Sustainable Committee Chairperson, Neo Moroka revealed Phase Two is a planned 600KWp solar power plant that will generate sufficient energy for the entire facility during the daytime.
“The recent global challenges have necessitated flexibility and agility from the human spirit but have not significantly slowed down the progress of the technological means through which to solve global challenges,” declared Moroka.
Permanent Secretary (P.S) in the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security, Mmetla Masire, said the solar plants will add to the realization of one of Botswana’s Vision 2036 goals in ensuring the country’s energy security.
“The government, having invested in the development of greener forms of energy through organizational reforms, welcomes initiatives such as these to benefit the environment and the nation,” said Masire, who also serves on the DTCB Board.
The P.S noted it is expected the project will spark construction of similar initiatives to ascertain a sustainable future for the planet and generations to come.
According to DTCB’s Managing Director, Sedireng Serumola, the purpose of the plant is to generate renewable energy for use by the company and possibly sell the excess capacity generated to Botswana Power Corporation (BPC).
