The world has arrived, and Botswana is ready.

This weekend, all eyes will be on Gaborone as the National Stadium plays host to the 9th edition of the World Athletics Relays for what promises to be one of the greatest sporting spectacles on the planet.

With over 1, 700 athletes and officials set to descend on the capital, alongside thousands of supporters and media representatives from across the globe, this is not hyperbole: it’s a fact!

Officially dubbed the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026, this year’s event carries the extra sparkle of being backed by mining giant, Debswana Diamond Company.

To ensure the showcase event is a success, Debswana has dug deep into its legendary pockets, committing P16 million towards the show.

For Debswana, this is far more than splashing the big bucks.

“We do not see this as a sponsorship, but as an investment for Batswana,” explains Debswana Corporate Affairs Manager, Kago Thapa.

“This is about showcasing Botswana to the world and telling the Botswana diamond story on a global stage.”

As natural diamonds face growing competition from synthetic alternatives, Debswana sees the relays as a unique platform to remind the world of the transformative power of Botswana’s special stones.

The company will use the event to highlight how diamonds have funded critical national infrastructure, from roads and schools to hospitals and community development.

“This is about promoting the diamond-for-impact story. As we restore the shine of natural diamonds, we are also promoting the shine of every sector of our economy,” notes Thapa.

She is confident the global spotlight will not only elevate Botswana’s diamond industry but also create opportunities for local businesses, tourism operators, manufacturers and entrepreneurs.

“Any Botswana-made product can become relatable to the outside world. This gives every sector of our economy a soft landing into international markets,” says Thapa.

Local Organising Committee Chairperson Thabo Osekeng hailed Debswana’s contribution as a ‘landmark moment’ for the World Relays.

“Debswana has made history and set the tone for other sponsors who have since come on board,” he revealed, adding the historic introduction of medals embedded with real Botswana diamonds has added to the excitement, a world first that perfectly reflects the host nation’s identity.

Botswana is the first African nation to host the prestigious relays, further cementing its growing reputation as a destination capable of staging world-class sporting events. The event is expected to attract high-profile dignitaries, including leaders from across the SADC region.

Meanwhile, tickets are selling like hotcakes, with VIP and Southern Stand seats already completely sold out.

Tickets for Panda are moving at remarkable speed, almost as fast as Letsile Tebogo sprinting down the home straight!

Taking readers into the heart of the action, Team Botswana Manager, Moses Gochela revealed the national camp is in strong shape ahead of the competition.

“The team is well prepared. The athletes are very excited to compete and show commitment as expected. All athletes are available in camp, and there are no injuries that will hinder performance. They are well and ready to represent the country well,” reported Gochela.

As Gaborone prepares to welcome the world, Botswana is ready, Debswana is invested, and the countdown to a glittering weekend of athletics has truly begun.
