Young suspect remanded for theft

ARRAIGNED: Kgotla Mothupi

A 21-year-old young man from Gamodubu village was this week arraigned before Molepolole Magistrate, Kefilwe Resheng facing four counts of breaking and stealing from a dwelling house.

The young suspect, Kgotla Mothupi was accused of stealing a 9kg gas cylinder, three savlon and securax soap all amounting to P583.80 and belonging to Selemogo Pitso last year Christmas Eve (December 25th, 2019).

Mothupi was also facing a charge of stealing properties belonging to one Lulu Sephantsha at Senyedimane ward, Gamodubu on April 25th, 2020.

The stolen properties included clothes, blankets, food and a set of different wines, all goods amounting to P12 415 00.

The energetic man with a thunderous voice and an explosive temper told the court that if the magistrate could not release him on bail he should be provided with a ruling to apply for bail at the High Court.

“I refuse to be remanded! What am I going to do in jail without being given statements to prepare myself for trial,” said angry Mothupi before the magistrate ordered him to calm down.

“I am trying to analyse you to find the problem. Why are you so angry? You disrespect my court and disrespect me. I once warned you that I do not like such behaviour, relax,” said Magistrate Resheng.

Mothupi had launched a spirited protest after the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent Uyapo Koketso had pleaded with the court to keep him locked up because he was also a suspect in a robbery case, which occurred at Gamodubu in 2016.

Eventually he was sent back to jail while his bail hearing was scheduled for July 28th.
