F/town Mayor’s Walk successfully launched
The first-ever Francistown Mayor’s Walk was successfully launched by City Mayor, Gaone Majere, in a joint activation with the Orange Phikwe Marathon last Saturday.
Scheduled for October 25th under the theme ‘Walk for Humanity,’ the event aims to raise funds for Francistown and improve the city’s profile nationally and regionally through sports tourism.
Speaking at the well-attended launch at Galo Mall, Majere said he leads a city that aspires to move with the rest of the continent and even the broader global community. “As a city, we would like to raise funds through this walk and to be able to construct water system toilets for less privileged members of our community with its proceeds,” he explained.
Majere said they further aim to improve the general health and well-being of the city’s residents, in alignment with Africa’s Agenda 2063 Goal 1, which advocates for a high standard of living, quality of life, and well-being for all citizens. The city’s first citizen believes such initiatives are a step in the right direction for Botswana’s aspiration to attain social inclusivity and equality by 2036.
“We intend to use the marathon to improve the visibility of the city council and that of other government departments in order to enhance community engagement and improve dialogue with communities,” he added.
The walk, which has three categories: 5km (P250), 10km (P300), and 21km (P350), will begin and end at the Old Francistown Stadium. The chosen route takes walkers past Tatitown Police Station and above the Kenneth Nkhwa Interchange and through the A1 road.
“There will also be an after-party at the Old Stadium once the walk has been completed,” revealed Majere, calling on Francistowners and the private sector to come forth and be part of the new development.
The next activation is scheduled for August.
