Newly weds and toddler perish in a fatal car crash

A week after tying the knot in Francistown’s area S, a family of three, a husband, wife, and their toddler, perished in a car accident on their way back home to Orapa from Letlhakane this past Saturday afternoon.

The couple had just walked down the isle, in two ceremonies celebrated on 29th and 30th September.

In a terrible accident that sent shockwaves throughout Boteti, Boitumelo Mothootsile, 43, was travelling from Letlhakane village to Orapa with his wife Tshepiso Matlapeng, 27, and their three children, a 2 year-old toddler, a 4 year-old boy, and an 18 year-old teenage girl, when their BMW lost control along the Orapa South gate road from Rakops junction, killing only the couple and their youngest child on the spot.

The Mothootsile family car collided with a cargo truck.

Confirming the accident, Orapa Police Station Commander, Mpapho Malomo revealed that the accident was not a head-on collision because the truck driver tried everything he could to veer off the road when he realised the BMW had lost control and was skidding all over the road, but sadly, the truck trailer remained on the road.

“We are still investigating to what could’ve caused the car to lose control, all we know is that the car collided with the truck’s trailer,” Malomo said.

The husband was driving, while the wife was sitting in the right backseat of the car with the toddler, therefore they were the ones who took the full impact impact of the collision.

The other two children, an 18-year-old girl sitting in the passenger front seat, escaped the accident with only a few scratches on her left hand, while the 4-year-old is currently being treated at Nyangagwe Referral Hospital for head injuries.

The driver driver did not sustain any injuries.
