After taking a long old break, Social Media Round Up returns this week. We’re back with a bang, hoping for the kind of impact the likes of Tebogo Letsile, the Harveys, Kanye West and a certain Donald Trump have had over the last seven days…
MINISTER’S CHILLY FEEDBACK
Star of the track, Letsile Tebogo made Batswana and indeed all Africa proud with his heroics at the just ended World Athletics Championships in Hungary.
The 20-year-old raced his way into the history books, becoming the first ever African man to win a 100m medal at the event, finishing behind America’s Noah Lyles to claim silver. Schoolboy followed this up with another medal in the 200m, snatching a brilliant bronze to singlehandedly double Botswana’s all-time medal count at the World Champs.
Praise poured in from all over. However, it was Sports Minister, Tumiso Rakgare’s comments that really caught the eye
After his congratulations, ‘Chillieboy’ declared, “If it were the Olympics you would have two houses courtesy of your government.”
Many saw this as unnecessary, with one noting, “It would have been better if he had kept quiet or just said Congratulations champ.”
Another comment read, “A regrettable statement by the excited minister.”
It is clear that the nation is generally disappointed by the proverbial dangling of fruit by the Minister to our record-breaking star.
THE HARVEYS HIT BACK
American comedian and part time Motswana, Steve ‘Mothusi’ Harvey found himself in the social media spotlight this week, after rumours broke that his wife, Marjorie, was having a steamy affair with her bodyguard. The story bubbled up from nowhere, resulting in various jokes, memes and think pieces online.
However, Harvey quickly quashed the talk by stating on stage, “Before I get started, just let me say, I’m fine, marriage is fine.”
Similarly, Marjorie took to social media to post, “My husband and I don’t usually stop to address all the foolishness and lies that have been spread about us.”
That didn’t stop the online masses from responding.
“This could just mean that she wants a divorce and he doesn’t,” reasoned one.
Coming to the couple’s defence, a pro-Harvey keyboard warrior hit back, “You people need to learn to mind your business. We see this every year with celebrity couples and you never learn.”
I guess we’ll soon see if there was any fire to go with the smoke!
KANYE ROCKS THE BOAT
Normally Kanye West is known for his high fashion dress sense but recently he was caught with his pants down, literally.
The artist popularly known as Ye was on a water taxi in Venice, Italy, with his new wife, Censori, and was spotted with his entire backside exposed, while his beau was crouched down in front of him. Needless to say, many are of the opinion that the two were engaged in bedroom antics aboard the water vessel.
“Let my guy enjoy himself in peace,” said one Kanye defender. It was also pointed out that, “This was almost the President of the USA.”
Looks like controversial Kanye is back again!
PIC OF THE WEEK
Speaking of American Presidents, Donald Trump’s long-awaited mugshot finally landed on social media platforms.
This is the first ever mugshot of a former US president.
Interestingly, the Trump Campaign has raised P96 million from selling merchandise of the mugshot to his supporters. Even under arrest, he is a shrewd businessman.
