No resting n peace for former leader as exhumation looms

He was controversial in life and now, almost two years after his death, his final resting place is creating a hullabaloo once again.

The remains of the late former President, Robert Mugabe are set to be exhumed from his rural home and re-buried at the National Shrine after a court ruled to that effect.

This will once again set Mugabe’s family and the current regime on a collision course as the former has always insisted they follow the former statesman’s wishes that he be buried at his rural home in Zvimba and not amongst other heroes of the liberation struggle.

According to the family, Mugabe’s fear was that those in power would harvest some of his body parts for muti purposes once given a chance to handle his body.

Although these fears seemed outlandish at the time, this obsession to have his remains exhumed certainly suggests somebody out there really wants to ‘do something’.

I mean really, why would they be bothered about where Mugabe is buried if they didn’t want to do some juju things as he feared?

But well, as some people point out, the late former leader deserves no peace as he tormented countless lives during his lifetime.

They argue that he did as he pleased so he ‘must also feel it’ even in death so his spirit never gets to rest.

Time will tell if the regime wins, though I foresee Mugabe’s widow, Grace fighting tooth and nail to block the exhumation.

They stood their ground in the first instance when they defied the government on Mugabe’s place of burial so why should they give in now?

Meanwhile, we are back to daily eight-hour long load shedding and I must say it really sucks.

Not that we are not used to this kind of life but we haven’t had such power cuts in a while.

I think the last time we had prolonged load shedding was about two years ago when they would last up to 18 hours.

So I guess this time we should actually be grateful as it’s at least less hours.

The other upside is that so far they are sticking to their scheduled load shedding timetable which makes it easy for planning.

I had gotten into the bad habit of writing this column on Tuesday evenings but not anymore.

I now have to adhere to the initial deadline of Monday as that is when we have power.

On Tuesday, we will be in ‘dark city’ as well as on Thursdays and Fridays while on other days, there will be no power during the day.

According to the power utility company, the outages are due to depressed generation at the country’s main power generation plants.

It is not clear how long we will have to endure the power cuts for but one can only hope they solve the problems as a matter of urgency.
