A goat thief was startled, waking from his slumber over the weekend, when a mob found him snoozing on top of the stolen animal’s carcass.
The 32-year-old man from Mhutsiwa ward in Lotlhakane East, got the shock of his life when he found himself surrounded by angry villagers who arrested him and handed him over to the police.
Kanye police Station Commander, Superintendent Vincent Pitseetsile, confirmed the incident noting that upon arrival at the scene, his officers found the suspect with the carcass.
“After the police received a report they rushed to the scene and found the suspect already arrested by the public. It is alleged that the man was found sleeping on top of the dead goat. He is still in the holding cell waiting to be taken before court,” explained the police boss.
It is alleged that on the Saturday morning at around 0800hrs, a woman spotted a goat lying on the ground partly hidden by a thicket not far from her kraal and she asked a neighbour to confirm if if it was hers.
The neighbour- a 73-year-old woman, walked towards the motionless goat and upon arrival, she found the man deep in sleep, lying on top of the goat.
She then went back to call for help, bringing back an incensed crowd that found the man still dead to the world.
Luckily the crowd did not harm the suspect, but instead surrounded him and waited for the police.
The suspect is said to have killed the goat inside the kraal and since it was too heavy for him to carry he dragged it outside the kraal to the nearby bush where he was caught sleeping.
