BSE raises P68 million in two months

The Botswana Stock Exchange Limited traded P68 million in turnover during the first two months of the year.

This was revealed by the BSE board member, Itumeleng Mareko on Monday this week during the monthly Bell Ringing ceremony, which the BSE also used to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Mareko said the amount traded during this period between the 4th of January and 26th February this year translates into an average turnover of P1.7 million.

“During this period, the number of shares traded equates to 55.5 million shares,” she said, adding that In terms of Market Capitalization, the equities market is valued at P39.1 billion, representing 24 domestic listed companies and seven foreign listed companies.

Mareko added that Botswana Building Society (BBS) remains the BSE’s only company registered on the Serala Over-the-Counter Board.

“With respect to a debt security, the value traded for Government Bonds from 4th January to 26th February 2021 stood at P25.9million while corporate bonds for the same period stood at P4.4million.”

This means that the total value traded of bonds stood at P30.3million during the period.

Currently, the BSE has six Government Bonds and 38 Corporate Bonds with a total bonds market capitalization of P21.1 billion.

Despite low in number, government bonds are valued at P15.6 billion while Corporate bonds are valued at P5.5 billion.

Meanwhile, turning her attention to International Women’s Day, Mareko said she was proud of organization’s contribution towards Gender Equality.

“Firstly, 50 percent of our Senior Management positions are occupied by women, while the 58 percent of the entire staff complement is comprised of women,” she said.

Secondly, she said the BSE has conceptualized a number of policies to safeguard and promote gender-balance such as the Sexual Harassment Policy, Remuneration Policy which advocates for equal benefits, and the Maternity/Paternity Leave Policy that ensures paid salary during pregnancy for female employees.

“Furthermore, the BSE commemorates international and national days set aside to acknowledge issues affecting both genders.”
