Teen’s pregnancy leads to boyfriend’s arrest

Days after he became a daddy, a young man’s world came crumbling down when his girlfriend’s mother reported him to the police for defilement.

The 22-year-old Mahalapye native, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, was arrested on 20 January after a day on the run, with police finding him at his home in Boseja ward where he lives with his parents.

Charged with defilement for sleeping with a 17-year-old (the legal age for consent in Botswana is 18), the youth is set to appear before Mahalapye Magistrates Court this Thursday (22 January).

Confirming the incident, Mahalapye Central Police Station Commander, Meshack Ranku revealed his officers were tipped off by the victim’s mother on Monday.

“The baby was born on the 14th of January. The victim was schooling at Madiba Senior Secondary School,” disclosed the top cop.

If found guilty, the youngster faces up to ten years in the slammer.
