Teams lining up for winger’s signature

After an excellent debut season in the tiny Southern European island of Malta, Botswana’s flying winger, Kabelo Seakanyeng is a footballer in demand.

The 27-year-old’s contract with Lija Athletic FC is up and, despite being offered a new three-year deal by the club, the former Gaborone United speedster is considering his options.

Seakanyeng enjoyed a stellar first year in Malta, registering eight goals and a staggering 16 assists to help Lija secure a second-place finish and promotion to the Maltese Premier League back in May.

With the 2020/21 season yet to commence due to Covid-19 – to date, Malta, which boasts a population of just over 500, 000, has registered 926 confirmed Coronavirus cases and nine deaths – he has had plenty of time to weigh up his next move.

Currently, on holiday in London, England, Seakanyeng told Voice Sport he was extremely happy at Lija and was waiting for the club’s management to respond to his demands.

“I think I have done well for the past season which is why the team wants to keep me. I love my club and I am enjoying my work. We are still negotiating and if they meet my demands I will sign,” stressed the Zebra, adding other European teams, as well as sides back in Botswana, have expressed keen interest in signing him.

“My former club Gaborone United and other Botswana Premier League made offers but I am yet to decide on my next move,” revealed Seakanyeng, who has also enjoyed short stints in South Africa with Chippa United and TS Galaxy.

However, he reiterated that he was content in Malta.

“Playing here has made me see things differently and it has contributed to my growth, both professional and personal. My play and performance on the field have improved a lot.”
