A married old-age pensioner in his 60s has been remanded in custody accused of raping his five-year-old granddaughter.
The suspect, who cannot be named to protect his granddaughter’s identity, appeared before Village Magistrates’ Court on Thursday seeking bail following his arrest on 2 nd October.
It is alleged the old man committed the offence on 29 September at his home in Gaborone’s Block 8 location, where he lives with his wife and the minor child.
Court heard the little girl was taken to Julia Molefe Clinic after complaining of itching in her private parts. A medical report presented to the police indicated signs consistent with sexual assault.
Charged with rape, having been locked up for a week, the aged accused sought his freedom, telling court he suffers from health complications, including diabetes.
However, the prosecution opposed his bail application, noting the suspect resides in the same compound as the victim and may interfere with investigations or intimidate witnesses.
“The safety of the minor is of paramount concern to the State,” the prosecutor persisted.
The matter was postponed to 15 October for continuation of the bail hearing, with the grey-haired accused to remain in custody until then.
