Serial Rapist to Serve 30 Years Behind Bars
Babolokeng Makhujwana, a serial rapist, faces the prospect of dying in prison after receiving a second 15-year sentence, adding to the 15-year term he is currently serving. His repeated offenses have cost him his freedom.
Convicted of rape for a third time, Makhujwana, who has already completed a previous ten-year sentence, will remain incarcerated until 2054, when he will be 73 years old. The Mapatse man does not expect to live that long.
“I am going to die in prison if my sentence does not run concurrently with the one that I am serving. I am asking for a lesser sentence, my worship; I am taking care of my father and children,” the 44-year-old pleaded with the Francistown Magistrate Court on Monday, begging for leniency.
However, his plea for mercy failed to sway Magistrate Ditebogo Ntuli. “The accused person is a repeat offender, and when mitigating, he did not state any extenuating circumstances. He also assaulted the complainant in a room with other people and her child. He is therefore sentenced to 15 years,” was Ntuli’s stern response.

Although he maintains his innocence, Makhujwana was found guilty of raping an older lady at a cattlepost on March 7, 2019, during a “letsema” event to prepare traditional brew. The gathering primarily consisted of women and children. While everyone was huddled together sleeping in the “setlaagana,” a drunken Makhujwana reportedly pounced in the night, raping a woman who was asleep next to her child.
The victim is said to have loudly asked, “Ke mang yo o nny***ng monna wame a seo (who is having sex with me because my husband is not here?).” Makhujwana reportedly responded, “You are too stubborn; I am reducing the stubbornness in you.” The court heard that after satisfying his sexual desires, he assaulted the woman before fleeing into the night. He was arrested two days later.
At the time, Makhujwana had recently been released from prison, having spent close to a decade incarcerated for raping a widow in 2011. In a revelation that made front-page news, the woman turned out to be the widow of a man killed by Makhujwana’s father, for which his father served 25 years. In yet another disturbing twist, while out on bail, he raped the same 65-year-old widow again in December 2021, for which he was sentenced to 15 years in August 2024.
Makhujwana’s legal troubles date back to June 16, 2000, when he was tried for common assault. On March 20, 2003, he received five strokes from Marapong Customary Court for a different common assault case. He failed to learn his lesson, however, as he was back before the tribal court in August 2006, once again for common assault. He now has the next 30 years to reflect on his life of crime.
