The discovery of human bones by a villager in Kazungula on Thursday afternoon has set police on a painstaking search to establish the identity of the deceased.

Kazungula Station Commander, Superintendent Peter Masole, told The Voice Online that the bones were discovered by a villager who was gathering firewood in the area and subsequently alerted the police. The villager reported seeing garments and bones he suspected to be of human origin.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found three ribs, a skull, and a jawbone.

“There was also a red rope and a small carry-on bag hanging from a tree,” Superintendent Masole said, adding that the bag contained a church uniform.

Although police cannot be certain at this stage, Superintendent Masole said they suspect the rope may have been used in a possible suicide.

“We suspect that the body decomposed over time, with the flesh falling off, and what remained was later eaten by predators,” he said.

He added that the skeleton was not intact, with bones scattered across the area an observation consistent with predator activity.

Superintendent Masole further noted that the skeletal remains did not appear very old, suggesting the death may have occurred around January.

The remains have since been taken to a mortuary, where they will await examination by a police pathologist.

“We will then go through our missing persons list to see if we can find a match,” he said.
